Bringing History Alive in South Shields
There is so much for all the family to see and do in the South Shields area with museums, galleries, parks, beaches, unusual art works, WW11 relics and exciting architecture. The Arbeia Society aim to promote the enthusiastic study of and research into Roman sites in the North East including Arbeia Fort. This interest group was formed to raise awareness of all aspects of Roman Britain specifically in the South Shields region. Members recreate Roman military and civilian life in Britain in the early third century attending exhibitions, shows, events and visiting schools etc. Clothing of the type worn historically is bought or made by members of Quinta who are dedicated to a high level of accuracy. Archaeological research is ongoing at Arbeia Fort and Museum partly funded by events organised by the Arbeia Society There is also a yearly conference with a theme related to topics such as Roman Britain and Hadrians Wall. The next conference entitled ‘ A Roman Imperial Family in Northern Britain: the Campaigns of Septimius Severus and their consequences’, is scheduled for Sat 19th November 2011. Any part of Arbeia Fort & Museum can be hired for weddings and other functions including Christmas parties with catering available.
