- Technical
A fundamental requirement for every website is that it must be well built and robust.
There are many styles and techniques that a designer can apply when building a website, however, where search engine positioning is an important issue, the range of design options is reduced. Our technicians will construct a site to a specification that we have developed in house and which ensures our websites are robust, flexible, user friendly, designed for search engine performance and compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.
- Aesthetic presentation
This relates to the look and feel of the site. Our graphic designer specialises in developing a website concept from the brief developed with the clients (see Website Design Process). We can use a variety of software applications, including Flash Animation, however we must be very careful in the specification of Flash where search engine positioning is a critical factor (see Search Engine Optimisation).
- Business component
Here we apply the strategic marketing expertise of Autus.
It is still quite common practise for website developers to say to clients - 'you give us the script and we will apply it to your web pages'. This was perhaps acceptable in the past, when clients spoke of simply requiring a 'web presence'. However, in today's environment, where search engine positioning is fundamental to the successful delivery from a website, it is totally unreasonable to ask the client to specify the web text. Here are several reasons why:-
- Web text must be written for the site visitor to scan, not scrutinise. It must be easy on the eye and aimed at stimulating the reader to act - now!
- The text must be structured in short sections, not long paragraphs
- For the search engines, the keywords should be distributed within the text. Too few and the message is not seen, to many and the search engines will penalise for spamming them
- Page tags must be selected very carefully. Autus utilises software tools to select words and phrases based on empirical evidence from search engine records
- Page headings, header tags and section headings must be carefully selected and identified to amplify the selected keywords
- In many cases, each page on a website can be used to emphasise different products or services for optimal search engine positioning for the company's product mix
- Text on each page should be developed to include opportunities to link pages on the site internally, for search engine purposes
- The use of bold and italicised text to emphasis keywords is important as is the selection of the words used for internal hyperlinks... And the list goes on...
