A national photographic archive, a contemporary arts centre and an extensive exhibition space all form part of the new University of Wales campus in Newport. The impressive £35 million building is situated on the banks of the River Usk, and its design and construction has been carried out with considerations like economy, ecological factors and aesthetic quality. Integral to the success of these aims was the installation of a substantial area of AA100 curtain walling by manufacturers Kawneer. The glazed façade reflects the desired transparent, open and welcoming feel that the University wishes to portray and has achieved a BREAAM ‘excellent’ rating.

Originally the plan was to install the standard steel curtain walling but a senior architect on the project stated that glazing and secondary steelwork systems would provide a more economical solution. She explained….”current market trends are proving that aluminium and secondary steelwork is just as competitive and a solution favoured by contractors…”

Good solar and acoustic performance as provided bydouble glazing were also requirements as the University is located in an exposed and busy area.

Autus clients FCAHP specialise in high quality aluminium double glazing and cater to the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. Curtain walling, shop fronts and secondary double glazing are professionally installed by FCAHP, while their associate company H&P Double Glazing Ltd supplies and installs PVC double glazing systems for the domestic market.
